Skyway II, retired Standardbred racehorse, age 19

"it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Heb. 9:27)

Death can, and does happen very unexpectedly, without warning. If you were to die today, would you be ready to meet the Creator of the Universe, the Lord Jesus Christ?

Jesus said, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3) Do you know you are born again? As you read this memorial for Skyway, consider your own spiritual needs.

January 31, 2010 started out below zero, but by noon time the sun was out and the temps were moving into the teens. I headed up to the barn to let the horses out into their pasture, Stormi first, then Sky, then Dancer, lastly Caruso. They were all excited to get out, snorting and jumping, and headed for the hay waiting for them. Caruso was prancing, Dancer was rolling, and Sky and Stormi trotted towards the hay. As Sky came around the tree, suddenly he slipped and fell! Surprised, I waited as he began to get up, then fell back. Again. Again? He couldn't seem to get his footing. I grabbed the wheelbarrow, threw a few shovelfuls of old shavings and hay in and ran down to him. I distributed it around his hooves, and tried to help him get his front ones out so he could grab hold and get up. He couldn't. I went to his rear and tried to move his legs, and he tried to get up. I will never forget the sinking, cold feeling I got when I saw- his left hind leg was not moving...

"But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body, that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:...So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: It is sown in dishounour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body." (I Cor. 15:35-37;42-44)

I ran to get my husband Marc and he came to try to get Sky up- we couldn't. Frantic now, I began calling for help- Dave Carbonneau, Ray Garcia, Rich Larcom. Marc called the fire dept...But Sky's hind leg won't move...he is groaning...oh no, no...I don't want to, but I have to-

I called the vet...

The Bible teaches there are two resurrections: the first for blood bought believers in Christ, and the second for those who reject Him "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."  (I Thess. 4:16-17) This is the resurrection of believers.  "And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." (Rev.20:13-15)  This is the resurrection of all who reject Jesus Christ as Saviour.

I called Laura Brown, Sky's longtime sponsor. Back outside, Marc was bringing blankets to cover Sky, Dave was giving Sky treats. We fed him sweet feed mixed with painkillers and waited...waited...waited...for the vet. Laura arrived, and Sky stretched out his neck towards her as soon as he heard her voice. We talked to him and petted him...and then the vet came. He reached down, picked up his left hind leg, moved it around, then let it down.
                                      "It's broken." ...

As the vet prepared to insert the needle into Sky's neck, I leaned down close to his ear and said softly, "Don't worry sweetie, I'll be in the stable. You will be so pretty all white, don't worry sweetie, I'll see you later..." and my big, beautiful boy slipped away.

"And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean." (Rev.19:11-14)

I will be riding with Jesus when he returns to set up His millenium reign- not because I live a good life, or rescue horses, or attend church, or help the elderly, or for any reason other than the precious blood of Jesus He provided for me. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost" (Tit. 3:5) "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. (Rom. 10:9) "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." (Acts 4:12) Have you been saved?

We buried Sky's remains, with the gracious help of DePalma Construction's backhoe and operator, Ed, in the front section of our pet cemetary. Our 2 dogs, Buddy and Hooch, and our 3 cats, Grady, Angeline, and Muffin are there as well.

Dancer passed away May 11, 2011 at the age of 27.

Dancer was a trooper, a former english riding lesson horse that came here at age 24. We soon discovered a large tumor on his penis that had to be surgically removed, as it was beginning to interfere with his normal functioning. We then found he had Cushing's syndrome, a metabolic disorder requiring daily medication. He was worth every penny I put into him- a sweet old boy with a "rocking horse" lope that was just heavenly to ride. He spent his last 3 years bringing joy to many,  many children, especially one teenage girl. I have a memorial up for him as well on Facebook.

Stormi Rush passed away June 20,2011
Stormi Rush came here with his best buddy Dancer in 2008. He was already an elderly gent at 28 but still surprisingly perky. He immediately became the best little pony ride horse I have ever had. He absolutely loved children, and was always oh so careful and willing to do exactly what they asked of him. He was the sweetest horse I have ever had the pleasure to be around.
I used to say time and time again, that I would love to have a thousand Stormi Rushs. His memorial can be found on Facebook

lickety split sweetie

Sasha was my very favorite dog ever. She came to us as a stray found in Easton, gaunt, starving, paws worn bloody from running only the Lord know how long. She immediately bonded with me, and what a smart little whippersnapper she was. I could just about talk to her. She was only about 3 when we got her and I had hopes of keeping her a long time. On July 23, 2011 I came home and she was lying on our deck, just sleeping I thought. But when she didn't get up to greet me, it seemed strange. I went over to her, and she was dead. We took her to the vet for autopsy as she was only about 6 years old. He said she had a congenital heart valve defect that just let go suddenly, and she died within 30 seconds of the rupture. I may never get over that loss.
